first journal entry

“But the teacher’s tales of the saints worked on me> like a potion. The teacher had me figured wrong-she thought> I was a godless boy with a devil in me, because of the> cigarettes and my truancy. But if the devil had claimed a> hold on my soul, and I was sure he had, he had done so> despite my best intentions; for even my truancy was born out> of my battle with him, of a hard choice between the lesser> of evils.”> > Tough words for a six year old don’t you think? This book> was written in a style that many have tried and failed. It> constantly switched from adult wisdom to childlike> innocence. One of the main themes laces through the novel is> religion. Many people, including myself, feel confusion> between culture and religion. Religion is a set of rules to> live by that were supposedly sent down by some sort of> higher being. I like to think I am a child of future society> in which most if not all stop believing in religion. This is> certainly a topic that is being debated in Toronto today> with the idea for these controversial ads that question god> to be put on the TTC. They claim 1 in 4 don’t believe in> god already so clearly we are seeing a trend. Some may think> we are becoming more educated now and so we don’t> blatantly fallow like zombies, perhaps this is showing> evolution in the form of us becoming critical thinkers.> Others feel we are losing or faith and values but why should> we have faith in something? Personality I think we all just> fallow everyone else they tell me this is what I am suppose> to believe so I will. Isn’t that how things like the> holocaust, and other genocides happened? People simply> believing what they are told by ways of propaganda, which> brainwash you to believe what they want. Religion does have> its place in society though it’s where most people learn> their morals. And I do believe everyone has morals of their> own that they fallow and that’s a good thing because it> makes them feel good about their lives if they live by them.> Religion was created to answer peoples’ life’s> questions; we are curious by nature and simply could not get> on with our lives if all we spend time thinking about is> what happeneds after death. It was created because the> majority of the population enjoys living their simple lives> only needing simple answers to calm their worries.
